Suppose a barista at a cafe adds an extra pump of syrup to your latte. You might think, "This is a bit sweet today," and move on. But what if a pharmacist misreads a prescription and dispenses a sleeping pill instead of blood pressure medication? Someone could die. This fundamental distinction is currently fueling a $285 billion (approx. 410 trillion KRW) sell-off in the global software market.
 
In early February, $285 billion evaporated from the North American software market in just 48 hours. Wall Street calls it the "SaaSpocalypse." A fear that AI will replace software has swallowed the market whole. Following the release of Anthropic’s Claude Cowork on January 12, Google’s Genie 3, and the unveiling of Claude Opus 4.6’s multi-agent coordination features on February 6, investors rushed to the conclusion that "software is no longer needed."
 
The S&P North American Software Index fell 15% in a single month, its worst performance since October 2008. ServiceNow dropped 46% over 12 months, and Asana saw 92% of its value vanish from its all-time high. Intuit plummeted 10.9% in a single day, with its P/E ratio shrinking from 38x to 19x. Fear is indiscriminately consuming all software.
 
Yet, something strange is happening.
 
Why is there no panic in Chemical Plant AI?
 
Look at the stock price of industrial automation giant Rockwell Automation during the same period. It hit an all-time high of $430 (as of Feb 3). With a Q1 earnings surprise, a majority of the 14 analysts covering it issued buy ratings, and KeyBanc raised its price target to $470. While the SaaSpocalypse is in full swing, this company alone is having a feast.
 
Isn’t it odd? The logic of SaaSpocalypse is this: "If AI agents can write code based on natural language commands, existing software becomes obsolete." By that logic, Rockwell’s FactoryTalk and Siemens’ TIA Portal should be equally at risk. "AI, maintain the reactor temperature at 150°C and close the valve if pressure exceeds 3 atm"—this, too, is a natural language command. Yet, the market is not panic-selling Rockwell.
 
Why? The answer is simple. If an AI opens a valve incorrectly in a chemical plant, people die. The market instinctively knows this: you cannot entrust life-and-death control to AI that operates probabilistically. Therefore, a premium is maintained for Rockwell’s deterministic control systems—PLCs and SCADA.
 
Here arises the $285 billion question: What is the difference between dying physically and dying legally or financially?
 
A Pharmacist’s Prescription, a Payroll Manager’s Paystub
If a pharmacist messes up a prescription, someone dies. What if a payroll manager messes up the payroll? The wrong amounts are deposited for 40,000 employees, resulting in a correction cost of $291 per instance—a $920,000 annual loss—and the CEO faces personal criminal liability for violating SOX Section 302. What if an accountant messes up an audit? A fine of up to 7% of global revenue is imposed for violating the EU AI Act.
 
It is merely a different kind of death. Physical death in a chemical plant, legal death in a payroll system, and financial death in an audit system. Yet, the market grants a "Determinism Premium" only to the former, while panic-selling the latter under the guise that "since it's software, AI can replace it."
 
Let’s use a more intuitive analogy: an online game. Suppose that in an AI-generated game cinematic, the flames that should come out behind a jet engine probabilistically appear in front of it instead. It’s weird, but it doesn't affect gameplay. But what if, in an FPS game, my bullets are blocked by a wall while an enemy’s bullets probabilistically pierce through that wall and hit me? No one would play that game. The location of flames can be "probabilistic," but the physics of a bullet must be "deterministic." For a game to function as a game, the rules must apply identically to every player.
 
Enterprise software is the same. AI writing marketing copy is the location of the flames. Even if it's a bit off, no one dies. However, payroll calculation, tax filing, medical billing, and financial transaction processing are the physics of the bullet. The same rules must apply identically to every employee, every taxpayer, and every patient. A single error leads to lawsuits, fines, and criminal prosecution. Software in this domain—Workday, SAP, ServiceNow, Oracle, Intuit, ADP—has business rules built up over decades embedded on the server side to ensure deterministic accuracy.
 
Three Truths Operating in Isolation
A bizarre situation is unfolding where three groups each know a vital truth but are not talking to one another.
 
First, the engineers know. No matter how smart an AI agent is, it cannot bypass server-side Business Process Frameworks. The logic Workday uses to calculate Korean severance pay, German 13th-month salary customs, or US state-by-state tax rates is a server-side enforced rule that the AI—the "consumer" of the API—cannot touch. AI can "call" these rules, but it cannot "replace" them.
 
Second, the insurance industry knows. You cannot insure errors made by AI. US specialty insurer W.R. Berkley introduced a clause "absolutely" excluding AI-related losses from D&O (Directors and Officers), E&O (Errors and Omissions), and Fiduciary Liability insurance. Verisk, the insurance data standardization body, announced standard AI exclusion clauses effective January 1, 2026. The emergence of AI-specialized insurers like Armilla AI and Munich Re’s NOVAAI is proof that the coverage gap in traditional insurance is massive.
 
Third, the regulators know. They cannot accept probabilistic AI logs as audit evidence. The US SOX Act, the EU AI Act (effective August 2026), and Korea’s AI Basic Act (effective January 2026) all require deterministic logging and human oversight for high-risk AI systems. The US PCAOB explicitly stated, "AI does not replace audit evidence."
 
The problem is that these three groups are not talking. Software analysts don't read insurance policies, insurance analysts don't understand API architecture, and regulatory experts don't care about stock price multiples. Wall Street’s sector-based coverage structure itself is preventing this integration.
 
The Future Asbestos Foretells
 
This pattern is not new to the capital markets. The most similar precedent is asbestos. The health risks of asbestos were known since the 1970s, but companies produced asbestos-containing products until the late 1980s. In 1986, insurers began inserting asbestos exclusion clauses. Once companies realized that "using asbestos means no insurance," they stopped using it and sought alternatives. In this process, the stock prices of asbestos-alternative companies soared, while those of asbestos-exposed companies collapsed.
 
The same causal chain has begun to operate in AI insurance exclusions: Insurance Exclusion → Change in Corporate Behavior → Market Repricing. While it took about 10 years for this cycle to complete with asbestos, it could be compressed to 12–24 months today due to the speed of information.
 
The same pattern followed the enactment of the SOX Act in 2002, which triggered an explosion in demand for auditable ERP systems, leading to a super-cycle for SAP and Oracle. When regulation mandates a deterministic system, the revenue of the provider of that system skyrockets. The implementation of the EU AI Act (August 2026) and Korea's AI Basic Act will be the next catalysts.
 
A Map of Opportunity Visible Through Fear
The price distortion created by market fear is clear. Intuit recorded $3.9 billion in revenue (18% YoY growth) and 34% EPS growth, yet its P/E ratio compressed from 38x to 19x. Jefferies analyzed that "regulators do not tolerate AI hallucinations in tax filings." ADP, which processes payroll for 1.1 million companies and 42 million people worldwide, is trading at a 23% discount from its 52-week high. What they have in common is that they are dominant players in domains where deterministic accuracy is legally mandated.
 
Conversely, in the game engine sector, a single 60-second demo video of Google’s Genie 3 caused Unity to drop 24%, Take-Two 7.9% (despite raising GTA 6 guidance), Roblox 13%, and Nintendo 11%. Multiplayer netcode, physics engines, and collision detection—these are all technologies that require deterministic reproducibility, yet the market sold them off in fear of a "60-second AI demo."
In simple terms, the market is looking at "AI that can replace a barista" and concluding that "it could replace a pharmacist too." This is the opportunity we see.
 
However, there should be no misunderstanding. Market fear isn't 100% wrong. SaaS that is merely a wrapper over an API or a visualizer that just makes data look pretty is indeed finished. AI does the same job faster and cheaper. Asana’s 92% drop may be excessive, but the direction itself isn't wrong. The key is differentiation. A system with deterministic business rules on the server side and a presentation layer sitting on top are completely different assets. The market is selling them off together without distinction. Within that lies the opportunity.
 
Determinism is the Answer
We call this phenomenon the "Integrity Premium." It is the paradox that as AI proliferates, the value of deterministic systems actually increases.
 
The logic is simple. As AI agents increase, "probabilistic processes" within a company increase. As probabilistic processes increase, the likelihood of error rises. As the likelihood of error rises, insurance costs go up or insurance itself becomes impossible. Then, a company must maintain its core processes—payroll, tax, audit, transaction processing—with deterministic systems. Consequently, demand for deterministic software in the AI era does not decrease; it actually increases.
 
Rockwell is the physical version of this truth. The market grants a premium to "determinism in a chemical plant" while panic-selling "determinism in a payroll system." This discrepancy exists because the market has not yet integrated the concept of the "Integrity Premium."
 
The catalyst we are watching most closely is the insurance renewal season in the second half of 2026. Most corporate insurance is renewed annually. Since Verisk’s standard AI exclusion clauses went into effect in January 2026, CFOs will first face the reality in the H2 renewal season that "if an accident occurs in a process replaced by AI, it won't be insured." That moment is when the market will begin pricing the Integrity Premium, and the window to take a position is between now and then.
 
Looking back at the past, the greatest investment opportunities always went to those who recognized the value of what does not change when the market was panicked that "the new thing will change everything." What survived the Internet bubble wasn't the Internet itself, but the companies that processed deterministic transactions on top of it. The same will be repeated in the AI era.
